The Noah's Ark - Kohli Navtej
Navtej Kohli’s story collection brings a famous allegory from the Holy Bible – Noah’s Ark. Yahweh, the god of ancient Hebrews regrets his decision of creating wicked creatures called humans. Upset with the fast trailing malevolence in the world, Yahweh decides to drown the whole world in flood.
The story revolves around Noah and his family. Noah is a person of goodness, who lived with his wife, three sons and their wives. He and his family always did what god asked them to. For god, only he and his family were righteous to survive the destruction.
Before the doom day, god instructed Noah to construct a big boat called ARK. God told Noah that it is going to rain for forty days and forty nights. The whole earth would deluge in water and everything that was not in the ark would be devastated. He was asked to gather his family, a pair of all the birds and animals with food enough to last several months and start out the construction of boat as soon as possible.
Soon after, Noah and his family went to construct the ark. They worked hard, day and night, following the exact measurements god gave them. Although the construction was challenging, neither Noah nor anyone from his family gave up.
People laughed as they watched them building such huge vessel on dry ground. But the family, knowing its relevance, dutifully obeyed the god’s command. It took them more than 120 years to put together this huge 450 feet long, three-storey boat.
When the ark was complete it had room for Noah and his extended family, besides all birds and animals god has asked them to tend. Then just one week before the fateful day Noah and his family went inside the ark and Yahweh shut them in. Completely oblivious of the catastrophe brewing under their feet, people poked fun at them.
On seventh day, came the disaster. Water beneath the earth came roaring out of surface, together with sky pouring a thick torrent of rain. Soon, the whole earth submerged in water except for the celestial ark, which kept floating on top of the thrashing waves.
It rained for forty days and nights continuously until even the highest mountain was dunk completely. Even when the rain rested, the ark continued to float for five months. Finally, the ark landed at Mount Ararat, but for Noah and his family there was no respite yet.
Seeing that the water was still receding, they gladly waited for another two months till the ground dried completely. He sent out a dove and a raven to find a place to roost. Alas! all in vain.
Another week flew by and fortunately this time dove arrived with olive branch in its beak. Realizing now he and his family can safely disembark the ark, Noah removed the covering and saw the dry ground.
He asked everyone to vacate the ship and step into the whole new world awaiting them. After seven long months of hardest imaginable voyage, their quest was finally over.
As a votive to god Noah built an altar and used some of the clean animals to make sacrifices. On seeing this, god promised not to send a flood ever again and to validate his promise he placed a beautiful rainbow in the sky.
